I love directing. Out of all the things I do directing gives me the most pleasure because you get to create the world. In my opinion the greatest directors are those that know the world they are creating inside and out from Spielberg to Scorsese and back to Kazan. They kiss every frame of the film.
I believe the key to being a great director is being prepared, knowing the world, casting and having an arsenal of tricks in case the actor is having a hard time.

It all begins and ends with the word, the story and the characters. I have learned as a writer to listen to the characters. They will speak to you and tell you what to do or not to do. You have to trust your gut because sometimes as actor will come to you and say “my character would never say or do that.” So Rule #1 Trust thy gut and listen to thy character.
I think that real writing is re-writing. As the characters come alive they will tell you.

A lot of people complain about the limitations of money. I have worked on small budgets and Huge budgets the creative mind in paramount being able to look at any problem and be able to figure it out in the blink of an eye without loosing any time or money is the mark of a great producer.
A true producer is resourcful and doesn't think in a box. Producers are really troubleshooters that on any budget will give the Director what he wants and sometimes with no additional money.

As a Keynote Speaker my topics vary depending on the audience. Sometimes I talk about being an Entrepreneur who took his credit cards to finance his first film and become part of Hollywood legend. And sometimes I talk about my journey from “The Hood to Hollywood.” The energy and sheer force that it takes to do anything. Other times I talk about faith and knowing that all things in life are possible with hard work and a positive attitude.
